the atheist who loves God

the definition of an atheist is someone who denies or disbelieves the existence of a supreme being or beings.

if a person is to deny or disbelieve something they must first have a concept(s) of that thing and then reject its definition, for hows it possible to reject a thing that you never knew existed.

all my life ive been told who God is, what he’s like, what he does, what he doesnt do, where he lives, how he operates and so on. they would tell me how big and great and all knowing he was, but would always follow that up with definitions and explanations which made Him small.

i believe God has given me the ‘ok’ to reject all those definitions, if only for a time, because Hes a God that cannot be defined. it seems to me that the only way to let God be the incomparable God that he says he is, would be to stop trying to compare him to things we understand. i say that because its hard to describe God without limiting Him at the same time. its not that the descriptions are entirely inaccurate, they just lack in completeness. i heard a man explain it like this, “God is not an object but an absolute subject who transforms our relationship with all objects. just as the light in the room cannot be seen but rather allows us to see, so God is not directly experienced but rather is the name we give to a whole new way of experiencing. is this not how we are to approach the idea of being born again? one does not experience birth; rather, birth is what opens us up to the world of experience.” (via peter rollins)

im trying to make room for God to be bigger than what i am currently able to comprehend, by rejecting what ive known. and if that makes me an atheist, well then ok. all i know is that this atheist loves his God more than he ever has before.

some people believe that Gods presence only exists within christian mediums…ok, well you limit Him to a genre and im gonna hear his voice as i listen to linkin park and read poetry written by buddhists.

others would have you believe God only reveals himself to people who gather on sunday morning to sing songs and listen to a 30 minute talk…thats cool, i will connect with Him as i watch the sun set through the window of the local coffee shop.

they also think that truth can only come from a preacher behind a pulpit…thats fine, i will choose to hear God in every voice, especially those that reject/deny Him.

and still some will tell you that if the mountains dont move and the oceans didnt part then God wasnt in it…but i hear his voice calling to me in the silence.

we have all these rules that disqualify God from being, speaking and doing based on whether or not we believe its possible. when we define what is possible or impossible instead of letting God determine it, we limit Him yet again. God is only as big as we allow him to be.

Understanding a concept does not mean excepting it as a part of reality.. I understand the concept of many other Gods along with fairies, unicorns, elfs, trolls, dragons.. as do you. This of course doesnt mean to say because I dont believe in this things i have to accept that they did in fact exist.

I understand your point in your post though and though I tried to find a term that would be fitting…

Christian Anarchism maybe (that isnt made up btw lol)

Maybe each person should make their own term :) How’s this?

Christian Mattism – One who believes in the Abrahamic God but finds that any doctrine is limiting in ones understand of this deity. In fact, any such deity may be incomprehensible to human understanding. However, the Christian Mattist strongly admires the teachings of the biblical Jesus and appreciates the contributions of a religious community.
